Making my mum a Brony 20'000 words at a time.

So I had a really interesting conversation with my mum recently. I thought I would post it here. Her reaction is quite hilarious. My mum is very open minded and into this generation so I was quite confident about tell her about. Here is the conversation the took place over a week.

Good to hear you are doing okay. For me things have gotten very interesting and different. I have recently gotten into a recent animated TV show that has become a huge meme on the internet and has grown everyday. It is a show that is viewed by ironically 80% not it's target audience. At first glance it looks stupid and retarded and childish but after I finally decided to give into my curiosity of all these memes popping up I decided to see what the big deal was. I watch 4 episodes of the show and was hooked and have become very involved in the fandom community based around the show and am now volunteering on finding music for a radiostream based on fan music for the show. I am being deliberately vague so rather then tell you, I want to surprise you by showing you this, the shock factor will be all the more powerful that way.

(No reply, but she sent me some money to help my financial situation. I sent another message.)

Thanks heaps for the money it has helped out a lot. I'm not sure if you read my last message and found out what I am into. I'll spell it out for you. It turns out the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is the manliest most awesome show out there. I have become a big fan of it and it's actual demographic is mostly Men over the age of 18. I would recommend you check it out. All episodes are easily streamable on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeJ6-gN0eB4

Sorry it took so long to get those cheques to you. I seem to have some weird disfuction going on when it comes to bank and post office chores!  I still don't have a computer set up cause I haven't been able to move into my new place yet. Hopefully this weekend. I am curious about this pony thing but I don't feel right downloading too much on Cath's puter so I will take a look as soon as I have my puter set up.
Hope all is well with you. How is tafe going?

Tafe is going well, I'm actually at the moment finding is boringly easy. But that's good cause I was worried it would get hard in the second semester. I on the other am actually going above and beyond in some of my assignments for the fun of it. For example. I am actually planning a formal presentation on why My Little Pony is awesome and why I should get to make a documentary about it. All that is actually required for that assignment is just telling the lecturer what your idea is, no formality required.

yeah the ponies again. Ah what the hay, let me just get it all off my chest to somepony. I think I have scared away my friend ----- from talking to him about this. I will admit that I am just a little tiny itti bitty bit obsessed with the show. I've never enjoyed a show this much, since the closest comparison would be Stargate SG1. But even that I wasn't compelled to read fanfics about it and watch and make video mash ups for it. It's more about the online community and the awesome people I have met thanks to this show that make me love it so much. 60% of which are males over 16.

I enjoy the irony of the show's unexpected audience with a passion and it has made me no longer afraid to express my feminine side. I am straight, I would have no reason to lie to you about that.

Anyway since this show went viral it has suddenly become cool, to admit to having feelings. and words like adorable and cute and snuggly wuggly hugs are a regular part of the brony community. (don't know if I told you this yet, A brony is anyone outside of the expected demographic (Girls from 5-12) of the show that love it, male or female.) Like I said it's such a MANLY show.

Now here's the part that may make you think I've gone off the deep end. I have started my own website about ponies and it is actually getting surprisingly popular. I am basically a journalist for pony related fanwork and I have rediscovered writing as a hobby I abandoned probably 10 years ago and I love it. here's the link, this website was 100% written and designed by me. some artistic help from fellow bronies, for the logo in particular was involved. http://www.thebronyblog.com/

I originally made this website as a casual let's see where this crazy idea goes. Then after a week and me nearly giving up on it. I got an email from a fellow brony who runs his own very popular pony website, offering to buy me an official domain for it. So that was literally money somepony handed to me out of trust I would use it for what he wanted me to. So I now have to continue this website. I can't let the most random and generous act of kindness I've ever seen go to waste.

Sure this craze about ponies may be a fad and I've considered that, but I still have at least one more confirmed season to take advantage of.

That is why I love ponies show much. It actually only has a little to do with the show itself and more the fan community. There is also a word I've never used so much in my life, and I now enjoy using it and I say it to complete strangers since it became cool.

I Love You.

This show has changed me and so many people I know.

Ummmm.... WTF???? What drugs have you discovered???

ponies are better then any drugs, lol

hmmm, ok buddy!!! Stop hacking my son's computer right now!!

hmmm how can I prove it's me. Hello ---- (her dog's name) crap shes licking me already stop!

You still not talking to ----?

I will never talk to ---- again as long as I live, that I am completly certain of!

well he deserves it he treated animals like crap. I have always had a bit of a passion for the science of animals, and he disgusted me.
not that I particulayly enjoy living with animals, I've always thought that was strange abou you

so what is this pony stuff?? is it like Pokemon or is it some mass brainwashing new technology program ???

Well I watched the Pokemon out of childhood nostalgia. shortly before My Little Pony and My Little Pony was much, much more entertaining.
It has quite a lot of similarities with D&D, mythological creates, dragons magic. fashion.... All that cool MANLY stuff

My dogs are my companions and friends and the only living creatures I feel safe enough to love with all my heart and know they are not going to betray or lie or hurt me for the fun of it!
Unconditional love means being able to take the bad with the good and just love the whole package
and only dogs/pets can make you feel that
anyway... rambling

I'll go read what you wrote! lol

pffft! and i'm not guilty of rambling

Is this really my son?

I would recommend watching at least a few episodes of the show, there are a lot of inside jokes in the blog.

yes, why do you find it so hard to believe I would enjoy a show for little girls.

i dunno, cause it's a show for little girls!!!

let me rephrase that it's a common misconception. It is a show made for little girls, that their parents can be comfortable watching. Plus Dragons and Rainbows, how are Rainbows not cool?

since I couldn't even get you to look at a real one in all it's beauty and splendor!

can you spare watching a 4 minute video?
I have normally snobbed kids show, maybe not any more after this.

is it like "Drawn Together" or sumfin?

yes, but it is ironically about as funny as drawn together, without resorting to toilet and vulgar humour. It is hilarious, yet innocent. But yes if you watch this show you will laugh you flank.... I mean ass off. excuse me there my spelling and grammar has been becoming ponified.

anyway if you can afford to watch a video of a few minutes I think this make the best argument for why this show is awesome.
(she had very limited download data)

or if a video is too much to download, here is a text post of how I got into the show http://www.thebronyblog.com/2011/07/my-ponification.html

By the way if I have your permission I think this conversation could make a good blog post. Would you mind if I post this conversation publically?

yeah, spose so
I have to go, cath has cooked dinner
talk soon xo

Wow in retrospect I may have over done it. Ha ha! Ponifying my spelling. But my mum has always been a very tolerant and a hipster. So I trust the worst that will happen is she will watch the show and still not get the appeal. On the other hand though she recently sent me a kids animated movie recommending it. She is also close to my generation, she plays video games and shares a lot of my values.

I also could have made some better arguments. Oh well it's all said and done now. I would be interested in any cool stories that anypony else has just post them in the comments. Or what you thought of what I said.

Well,it would seem you handled that conversation rather well.I wish my mum was THAT much hipster and techie(mine only uses word processing and accounting programs as well as email.Nothing really interwebzy),as well as laid back in that sense.TBH I can't even think of a way to tell her about me bronyness(well, actually all I've seen was about a minute of ep.1 skipping around while everyone else was out somewhere.I'm more the pony-macro type),since I've no idea how she would react or how I'd handle the conversation, and I've no one to back me up yet,as I have ABSOLUTELY no nerds in my school that know half as much about the webs as I do.Not to mention my siblings and dad(who's somewhat techie, but more a Photoshop/After Effects/Music writer guy.But not too internetty,'cept for the occasional meme reference ,like All your base or the Rickroll).Bleh.Well,grats for your convo going well.

Also, cool blog bro.Saw this on ponychan and thought I'd take a look.Seems well written and clever.I'll be following and perhaps come up with a pony-stuff specific name once my brain gets creative.

  3. Quite a jump in with Positive Qualities. It is one of my favorite PMV's, but I don't think it is a great choice to introduce someone to ponies. It is cool that you have such an even-standing relationship with your mother. I don't think I could ever break my bronyism to my parents. They wouldn't get it.

  4. Thank you all for all the kind words. It make me sad that bronies have to be afraid tell there parents they like a show that is so good, just because it has a childish name and occasional girly references. Not nearly as many as I expected.

    /me shrugs
Well,I guess once the school year starts I can see how things'll go with my bros, then see what happens next.
I envy the people who can not give a f*** to other people,or those who have people who just don't care about it.
But I also seem to notice that they all have one thing in common.
    No bullies.
    Yup,those insecure*coughmecough*,sneaky,headstrong @#$%s.
Seriously, they all didn't die out, there's still plenty lurking throughout the school system.
I mean,if you're dubbed "gay",you're pretty much doomed(read:have a 15% chance) for a whallop in HS(I'm not there yet, thank goodness),which seems where plenty of bronies emerge.Yet...I've not seen ANYTHING about being bullied for this, save for some nasty words being exchanged.
So what's it about bronies that makes bullies not care?

  6. We have an actual gay guy in my class and no one cares and the other guys hangout with him like he's one of the guys. I guess in Australia people are a lot more tolerant, or on the other hand, this is university I'm talking about 19-24 year olds. High school is probably a much harsher place.
